Peter Erlacher

At Naturno, building his house, Peter Erlacher, a bio-architecture expert, has put into practice the principles that are much discussed but still the prerogative of a few.

How did you come across the idea of living in this kind of house?
It’s not simply fashion or “weirdness”, but a serious choice that involves my family and my job. We have created a specializing center for the collection of selected products for a “healthy” life, not only honey and apples, but also lime-based paints, or wool jumpers tinted with natural dies, to give an opportunity to anyone who wants it, of living a simple, not primitive, life.
Which criteria did you follow for the distribution of the environments?
On the ground floor, northwards, I have located the cellars with a sloping roof/wall covered with earth to keep a constant temperature. Southwards, a warehouse/workshop opens into the garden. A wooden stairway leads to the first floor with the living areas. The ‘heart’ of this floor is a sophisticated wood stove that also works as a boiler. Here, the focal element is the huge windows that frame the sunlit mountains. At the rear, towards the north, the wooden structure of the stairs is next to a library, with books and filing cabinets, and a bathroom. Another bathroom is found in the same position on the second floor, where the bedrooms were located following the wise habits of peasants.
How do you control the climate of this house?
The façade is oriented to the south, not only for esthetic reasons, but for the passive exploitation of solar energy. The inclination of the external window conveys the sun rays into the living room, which is shielded by a second glass pane in the winter season. This second window creates a small glasshouse, which actually works as an insulating and heating element. In the summer, roll-up curtains shield from direct sunlight, while a fresh breeze blows from the hills through the wide open windows. As for materials, I have used mainly local timber.

Wood, the leitmotiv of this house, is all around.
