Il nuovo spazio Byblos a Mosca è interamente giocato tra continui e audaci cambiamenti di ritmo: linee prima rette si piegano in curve e poi subito in spigoli, superfici lucide e opache si incontrano, giochi di luce e di ombre si contrappongono.

The new Byblos space in Moscow plays entirely on continuous and audacious changes of rhythm. Straights fold into
curves and then immediately into corners; shiny surfaces meet opaque ones, and there is a juxtaposition of light and shaded areas.

	Sean Dix, dopo aver lavorato per Tom Dixon, James Irvine, Ettore Sottsass, apre nel 2000 a Milano uno studio di design e architettura. I progetti spaziano da retail concepts e negozi, a sistemi di esposizione e prodotti industriali, quali lampade, oggetti da cucina e complementi di arredo.

studio in Milan in 2000. Projects range from retail concepts and shops to display systems and industrial products,
such as light fixtures, kitchen objects, and furniture.

Surfaces of three-dimensional waves

Ciò che rende davvero interessante il nuovo retail concept progettato dal designer Sean Dix è l’avvincente carica creativa del segno plastico veicolata dalla ricerca di nuove espressioni matericoformali. Il carattere sperimentale del progetto, propone forme geometriche nette e importanti, veri e propri volumi architettonici strutturali, che danno vita ad un ambiente ed ad uno spazio complesso.

I tavoli che arredano lo spazio hanno una base costituita da un’infinità di lame di metallo dalle forme decise, ma leggere. The tables that furnish the space have a base made of myriad metal blades that create definite yet light shapes.	Le grucce prive di gancio, prodotte da DAMA, sono trattenute in una rotaia calamitata. Segue il perimetro dello spazio un nastro luminoso che orla le archittetture del soffitto, diventando elemento decorativo capace di esaltare le forme geometriche della struttura. A luminous strip that runs along the edge of the ceiling delimits the perimeter and becomes a decorative element that emphasises the geometric shapes of the structure.

What makes the new retail concept by designer Sean Dix truly interesting is the captivating creative charge of the plastic mark conveyed by research into new material/formal expressions. The experimental nature of the project offers neat and important geometric shapes, genuine architectural structural volumes that give life to a complex space and setting.

Nello studiare la nuova immagine per i negozi Byblos, Sean Dix è partito dall’analisi di due elementi: il primo, il logo
esistente, gioco di spigoli e di curve, linee rette e di nuovo curve, cercando di rispettare lo stesso tipo di ritmo. Il secondo è nato dal desiderio di creare un racconto tridimensionale, volto a comunicare una filosofia e un’identità visiva e aziendale; creando, quindi, una boutique che abbia una forma, un’architettura e un volume. I muri sono in movimento, come una superficie di onde tridimensionali, creati con un intervento particolare tale da imprimere patterns geometrici in tre dimensioni. Altre superfici, di contro, sono lisce e lucide. L’incontro tra opposti è un tema che caratterizza il progetto: superfici lucidissime e riflettenti si alternano ad altre opache che assorbono la luce. Qui l’architettura sembra davvero
prendere a prestito le parole dalle scultura.

Lo studio del progetto nasce anche dall’analisi grafica del logo “Byblos” e cerca di rispettare, a livello plastico, lo stesso tipo di ritmo, giocato su linee rette e curve. The project originates from a graphic analysis of the Byblos logo, and it seeks to respect, on a plastic level, the same type of rhythm that plays on straights and curves. When designing the new image for the Byblos store, Sean Dix began with an analysis of two elements: the first was
the existing logo that plays on corners, curves, and straight lines; the second came from a desire to create a threedimensional narrative that conveys visually the philosophy and identity of the company. The intention, therefore,
was to create a boutique that had one shape, one style, and one volume. Walls have motion, like a surface of threedimensional waves created in such a way as to have geometric three-dimensional patterns. Other surfaces are
smooth and shiny. The meeting of opposites is one of the project’s underlying themes: shiny reflecting surfaces alternate with opaque light-absorbing ones. Here the architecture truly seems to be speaking the language of sculpture.

La narrazione spaziale prosegue nella dimensione plastica degli espositori, mobili che sfidano la stabilità, ancorati al pavimento: aprendosi in archi rapidi, su una base ridotta, propongono ancora una volta l’incontro tra linee morbide e
curve che terminano in uno spigolo. Lungo le pareti laterali si susseguono mensole luminose realizzate con una speciale tecnologia. Creano l’illusione di una luce in grado di sostenere il prodotto esposto. I tavoli che arredano le boutique
sono resi più attrattivi e misteriosi dall’impiego di un’infinità di lame di metallo che ne costituiscono la base. Si
ottiene così un volume dalle forme decise, ma al contempo leggero.

Per contrasto alcuni muri hanno una superficie di onde tridimensionale, creati con un intervento particolare che imprime patterns geometrici in tre dimensioni. Altre superfici sono perfettamente lisce e lucide. By contrast, some walls have a surface of three-dimensional waves created in such a way as to have three-dimensional patterns. Anche gli originali lampadari collocati all’ingresso della boutique sono costituiti da centinaia di lame sottili, dando vita a un sottile gioco ottico di luce vibrante. La carica creativa, ma funzionale fa mostra di sé anche nel sistema di appenderia: le grucce prive di gancio, sono trattenute in una rotaia calamitata. Ogni episodio narrativo è sottolineato da un nastro luminoso che orla le architetture del soffitto, esaltando le forme geometrice della struttura. Un nastro di luce scavato nelle putrelle diviene, così, elemento decorativo e ritmico dello spazio.

Optical effects of vibrant light

Le superfici si alternano tra lucidissime e opache, tra quelle che assorbono la luce in contrasto con altre riflettenti. Spatial narration continues in the plastic dimension of the showcases that challenge stability and are anchored to the floor. Opening in rapid arches on a reduced base, once again they create a meeting of gentle curves that end in a corner. Along the sidewalls there is a succession of illuminated shelves made using special technology. They create the illusion that light is supporting the product on show. The tables that furnish the boutique are embellished and made more mysterious thanks to the use of myriad metal blades that create the base. In this way a volume of definite yet at the same time light forms is obtained. The original light fixtures at the entrance of the boutique are also made of hundreds of thin blades, giving life to a subtle optical effect of vibrant light.
