Fettuccia Curtain header tape
Release the strings of the header tape and fold over approximately 1 cm (3/8 in).
Position the curtain header tape close to the top edge of the curtain and pin.
To create a header, fold over a top hem and stitch the curtain tape below the top edge.
Machine stitch the header tape down on four sides, through all layers – tape, lining and fabric.
Knot one end and pull up the strings.
Tie the strings in a bow and do not knot them.
For pencil pleat tape attach the soft side of the hook and loop fastening tape between the top two strings, before pulling up the tape.
For standard gathering tape, attach the soft side of the hook and loop fastening tape immediately above the top string of the curtain tape, before gathering.
Arricciature e bordi Attaching frills and borders
FRILLS: Join strips, gather them, and then stitch the frill to the fabric, right sides and raw edges together. Position the lining on top of the fabric with the frill sandwiched in the middle.
BINDING BORDERS: Iron in 1,5 cm (5/8 in) along each edge of the border. Stitch the border and fabric, right sides together, and then fold the border over the fabric to finish the raw edge.
CURTAIN EDGE BORDERS: Fold the border strip in half and press to provide a perfectly straight fold line. The border is sandwiched between the lining and the face fabric, right sides and raw edges together.
BINDING BORDERS: Mitred corners are used for borders that fold over fabric edges on two or more sides. Press hems into the border and stitch the border to the fabric, right sides together. Fold diagonally at the corner and then over the fabric edge and pin. Cut away the square of excess fabric and top-stitch the border onto the front of the fabric. |
Ripiegare in diagonale la striscia superiore nell’angolo. Tagliare il tessuto in eccesso. Continuare la cucitura a macchina lungo l’angolo, sopra e sotto.
RECESSED BORDERS: When a border is required to turn a right angle the corner must be mitred. Press hems into the border strips. Pin the borders in place so they cross each other. Top-stitch them down along both sides to the point where they meet each other. Fold the lower border under and pin. Fold the upper strip diagonally across the corner. Tuck excess fabric away and trim. Continue the stitching (by machine) across the corner, top and bottom. |
Passepartout e bordatura Passepartout and Piping
Binding is cut on the cross to give it maximum pliability. Fold the fabric diagonally.
Iron all the seams flat with a steam iron and trim the edges. Then fold in the sides to meet each other in the middle and press. |
Stitch as close to the ridge of the string as possible, using a zip foot.
If piping needs to be joined, it must be opened out so the string can be inter-twined and the fabric joined separately. The fabric is then folded back over the string and machine stitched closed. |
Misurare strisce di 5 cm. di larghezza. Tagliare entrambi gli strati del tessuto.
Measure off 5 cm (2 in) strips. Cut through both the layers of fabric.
Bias bindings of various widths are used to bind raw edges.
Snipping the tail of the piping allows it to turn easily.
Join the strips to create one continuous length of bias binding which can be manipulated easily because the strips are cut on the cross-grain of the fabric. |
Piping Bordatura
To make piping, place string down the centre of the wronsr side of bias binding.
Piegare la fascia sulla corda.
Fold the bias binding over the string.
As a general rule, piping is sandwiched between the face fabric and the lining, right sides and raw edges together. |
Cuciture invisibili Flat seams
Flat seams are commonly used in curtain making.
Snipping the seams allows the layers of fabric in the seams to turn and lie flat. |
Remove the triangular edge of a square or rectangle, and press the seams flat so the fabric turns easily to create a perfect corner.
Snipping seams involves making vertical cuts in the seam that reach down as close to the stitch line as possible. The deeper the vertical cut the more effective it will be. |
A point must be trimmed to allow yon to iron the seams flat and create a perfect fold.
All seams must be ironed flat. This allows the fabric to fold and turn perfectly along the seams. |
Balze Curtain hems
As a rule, side hems are stitched in first, and the bottom hem is folded up over the side hems. Curtain hem allowance should be approximately 20 cm (8 in), folded in half lo make a hem ufabout 10 cm (4 in). In a loose lined curtain the lining hangs free of the curtain. A locked-in lining is slip-stitched to the side hems.
