The exterior appearance of the chalet, built using traditional criteria, says nothing of its modern interior, which is perfectly in step with Cortina today: modernity and lots of nature. Owning a house in Cortina is a privilege in itself; living in a house with panoramic view of the Tofane is a magic that only the lucky few will experience. It was a good decision to tell the renovators (in this case ‘Alberto Del Biondi Industria del Design’) to set off the beautiful view as much as possible, while respecting the architecture of the chalet built in the 1960s so that it was coherent with local style. Central to the final effect is the decision to use zenital lighting inserted in the space between the ceiling and the vertical walls.
This minimalist almost transparent architecture has cabinets that form a single unit with floor and ceiling, given that they are built using the same material: fir wood worked strictly by hand. The containers, from simple wood bases become distinctive features, and are always usable as large convenient drawers, whether they are the chairs of the living and dining room or the bed base. On the ground floor a decorative wall in rough-hewn stone separates the space between entrance and living room, and it contains a large fireplace closed by a long sliding glass panel. Detail of the wall in wood and one of the beds arranged on the terrace for sunbathing. The entire house has been designed to provide continuity with the exterior, and the terrace is a popular and comfortable area.
The chandelier built using deer horns comes from a tradition that dates to the Middle Ages. For the kitchen worktop a streaked marble by Margraf, from Chiampo in the province of Vicenza, has been used.
The stark material design of the dining area created by architects Alberto Del Biondi and Tiberio Cerato.
For maximum centrality, the bed is beneath the summit of the roof, between the shower and the panoramic window. The shower has a river-cobble floor that is beneficial for a plantar massage. The washbasin has been dug out of a block of dolomitic rock that complements the handcrafted wood of the wall.
The connections between vertical walls and ceilings have been designed with a gap that provides room for continuous lighting that puts in relief the wood or stone claddings. The motif of the two symmetric deer separated by a heart-shaped branch is a decorative icon of Cortina which here has been used for the sake of memory, a memory that has not conditioned the indoor furniture (as is clearly visible) but which has not been completely forgotten about either. These serigraphic deer decorate, almost as if they were a family crest, both the glass of the sliding door between the living and dining room, and the glasses. Other features of Cortina tradition are also present, such as the old chandelier made using deer horns, one of the largest of its type, and the wild animal hide used for cushions and as a bed cover. This is a space to be experienced and touched (even to be smelled, considering the marvellous scent of the wood); a photograph, no matter how good its quality, will never render the tactile and spatial values of the architecture. By looking carefully at the photos of the details you can imagine how one feels living in such rigorous and even monumental spaces. The zenital light contributes a lot to setting off the rough cleft-stone surfaces and the top quality fir wood worked using an axe as in the past. As a result, the indoor space is severe yet cosy at the same time, silent and strong just like the Tofane mountains outside. This is an interpretation of the spirit of Cortina d’Ampezzo worthy of its predecessor, architect Luigi Vietti, inventor of the so-called Cortina style, which here is not pertinent. The linguistic instruments are diametrically opposite, although in common there is the fear of not providing architecture that is good all round, yet they are profoundly rooted to the spiritual value of the place.
