Percorrendo la strada Valeriana 402, Mantello è il secondo comune ai piedi della Costiera dei Cech. In questo piccolo comune della Bassa Valtellina sorge questa casa, su un ripido terreno roccioso e affacciata a sud sul fiume Adda.
L’architetto Giuseppe Balzaretti si è trovato di fronte un lotto di terreno al limite del borgo, di forma triangolare, a terrazzamenti (una volta coltivati a vite) e sovrastato da una parete rocciosa. Una volta studiato il territorio il progetto è stato articolato in diversi volumi in modo da sfruttare al meglio la posizione.
L’architetto ci dice di non poter progettare prescindendo dal coinvolgimento “attivo” del luogo.
Infatti nei suoi progetti emerge il suo pensiero.
Il verde entra in casa grazie alla veranda interamente in vetro,
ricreando un piccolo giardino invernale.
Un tempo, dalle intemperie, ci si difendeva con le pareti spesse,
dalle aperture ridotte.
Il divano, le poltrone e le lampade sono opera del designer Romeo Sozzi scelto dall’architetto, oltre che per il legame di
amicizia che li lega, anche per la cura del dettaglio che mette nei suoi progetti. Per i rivestimenti sono stati scelti toni
caldi e vivaci.

This house is located in Mantello, a small town of Lower Valtellina at the foot of the Costiera dei Cech.
wIt stands on a steep rocky terrain that looks over the River Adda to the south.
Architect Giuseppe Balzaretti was faced with a building lot at the edge of town that was triangular, terraced (formerly a vine plantation), and with an impending rock behind it. Having analysed the landscape, the design of the house was given various volumes that could make the most of its location.
Un eclettismo progettuale ma sapientemente trattato per ottenere
un edificio coerente. L’architetto ha la capacità di utilizzare differenti
tipologie di tetti, di facciate, all’interno dello stesso progetto che con passaggi
fluidi creano un’unità mai monotona.
L’arredamento è realizzato prevalentemente su misura da artigiani, in modo da conferire una grande personalità alla casa. I quadri alle pareti e i tappeti persiani caratterizzano il soggiorno, giocando con il contrasto nero e fucsia . L’elegante camino, vero protagonista, è di Edilkamin.
The furniture is mostly custom-made, providing the house with a personal touch. Paintings on the wall and Persian
rugs characterise the living room and play on a contrast between black and fuchsia. The true heart of the home, the fireplace, is by Edilkamin.
La pietra è alternata da facciate in pannello di legno multistrato con inserti metallici che oltre ad essere elementi
costruttivi diventano motivi decorativi.
Stone walls alternate with multi-ply wood panelling with metal inserts, which are building elements and decorative
features at the same time.
Così si racconta: "Se dovessi attingere solamente al preesistente e alla tradizione ripeterei quello che il luogo prestabilisce. Mancherebbe la presenza del contemporaneo; lo spirito dei miei tempi, la mia cultura, i miei piaceri. Se,
viceversa, la mia architettura parlasse il linguaggio della globalizzazione, della più sofisticata ingegneria dell’abitare, sentirei la mancanza del peso specifico di ciò che è locale. Per cui ritengo di non poter progettare prescindendo
dal coinvolgimento attivo del luogo. Penso sia profondamente giusto misurarsi con il passato nel progettare il futuro, mantenendo però i due livelli distinti e facendoli incontrare nel solco di una tradizione che sopravvive perché dimostra
di sapersi rigenerare."
L’architetto utilizza materiali locali come pietra, ferro e legno nella loro nudità con l’obiettivo di fondersi con il contesto e servirsi delle loro proprietà. Li lavora con le moderne tecnologie e attraverso avanzate tipologie di costruzione
riesce a creare una casa minimale ma calda. Il progetto si snoda attorno ad una grossa onda che caratterizza la casa sia dall’esterno che dall’interno. Il sinuoso tetto, sotto il quale troviamo la zona soggiorno, regala dall’interno
un’affascinante travatura che unisce il primo e il secondo piano in un unico volume. Nel soggiorno lo sguardo vaga tra fuori e dentro, tra sopra e sotto costruendo il volume abitativo.

DAL 1983 AL 1995 HA LAVORATO IN ASSOCIAZIONE CON ALTRI TRE COLLEGHI OCCUPANDOSI, TRA L’ALTRO, DI PROGETTAZIONE ARCHITETTONICA RELATIVAMENTE ALLA COMMITTENZA PRIVATA. l’architetto Giuseppe Balzaretti sposa il pensiero dell’architetto André Bruyère:
"fare non importa cosa, ma con passione e da solo: ecco la sola giustificazione di essere architetto"
Entrando in casa il perno centrale è il corpo scala inserito in un particolare vano che non arrivando fino al soffitto lascia circolare aria donando un’interessante continuità visiva quasi di fluttuazione.
Il vano scala è formato da un muro rivestito ad encausto che si avvolge su se stesso per accompagnare al piano superiore.
La casa è sviluppata su tre piani sfuttando al massimo il naturale pendio della montagna. Il piano interrato è dedicato ad autorimessa.
Al primo piano troviamo la veranda che non è altro che una piccola serra fiorita utile a stemperare il passaggio tra il dentro e il fuori, il soggiorno, la cucina e una camera giochi per i bambini. Salendo da una lato si trova il soppalco che affaccia sul soggiorno adibito a sala relax. Nell’altra ala, la stanza da letto è divisa in due da un taglio di luce creato dal colmo del tetto realizzato in vetro. Particolare è l’approccio che l’architetto ha con la stanza del bagno, la tratta come se fosse un piccolo e privato centro benessere: cerca il contatto con la natura creando un’apertura verso il cielo in corrispondenza della doccia, quasi a voler suggerirne una di acqua piovana.
Disimpegno e salotto assieme: la poesia dello spazio sta anche nella sua indefinibilità.
Ogni luogo del passare è anche un luogo dello stare, e viceversa.
The architect tells us that a design can not be made without active hands-on experience of the site.
Sure enough, his design philosophy can be seen in his projects. "If I only draw on what already exists, on tradition, I am simply repeating what the site has pre-ordained; there is nothing contemporary, nothing of the spirit of my time, my culture, or my will. Likewise, if my architecture were to speak the language of globalisation, and the language of the
most sophisticated home engineering, I would miss everything that is local. This is why I believe a design can not be made without active hands-on experience of a given site. It is absolutely right to want to measure yourself against the past when designing the future, but these two levels have to be distinct; they can meet in the context of a tradition that survives because it has proved it knows how to renew itself."
The architect uses local materials such as stone, iron and wood without adornment so that they can merge with their context while making the most of their properties. Using modern technology and advanced methods of construction he is able to build a minimal, albeit warm, house. The main design feature is that of a large wave, which characterises both the interior and exterior of the house. The sinuous roof, beneath which is the living room area, creates an interesting arrangement of beams on the interior that makes a single volume out of the first and second floor. In the living room, the eye roams freely between inside and out, above and below, and in so doing creates a mental picture of the living unit.

Ecco un piatto poco conosciuto, meno famoso dei ben più noti Pizzoccheri e della Polenta taragna… Ingredienti (4 persone):
400 gr. di patate – 300 gr. di fagiolini – 100 gr. di fagioli – un pezzo di zucca – 2 carote (vanno bene tutte le verdure che si hanno a disposizione) -200 gr. di Valtellina Casera – 150 gr. di burro nostrano – 1 spicchio d’aglio – sale e pepe.

FATE BOLLIRE LE PATATE I FAGIOLI E I FAGIOLINI, UNENDO SUCCESSIVAMENTE LE VERDURE CHE CUOCIONO PIÙ IN FRETTA. A COTTURA ULTIMATA SBUCCIATE LE PATATE, UNITELE AI FAGIOLINI E, AIUTANDOVI CON UN CUCCHIAIO DI LEGNO, (IL PIÙ MODERNO MINIPIMER VA BENE) SCHIACCIATELI SINO AD OTTENERE UNA PUREA. METTETE L’IMPASTO IN UNA PIROFILA ALTERNANDOLO A STRATI DI FORMAGGIO TAGLIATO A CUBETTI. VERSATEVI IN ULTIMO SOPRA UN SOFFRITTO DI BURRO E AGLIO BEN ROSOLATO. I TARÒZ SONO IL PIATTO TRADIZIONALE VALTELLINESE COSTITUITO DA VERDURE QUALI: PATATE, FAGIOLI E FAGIOLINI E ALTRE VERDURE E CONDITO CON BURRO E FORMAGGIO VALTELLINA CASERA; UN TEMPO VENIVANO CUCINATI DIRETTAMENTE SUL FUOCO DEL CAMINO O DELLA STUFA A LEGNA.
Sospensione e leggerezza anche nei balconi in griglia metallica che lasciano respirare la facciata senza appesantirla e permettono di avere una visione del panorama a 360° dandoti la sensazione di camminare nel vuoto.
Suspension and lightness can also be seen in the metallic grey balconies that let the façade breathe without
weighing it down; they provide a 360° view of the panorama giving you the impression of walking in mid-air.
Le finiture delle pareti interne sono in gesso rasato più idropittura mentre i pavimenti sono in massello di rovere e quarzite. I serramenti, che creano continuità con l’esterno e il paesaggio, sono in legno lamellare di conifera europea con vetrate isolate. La stanza da letto presenta un arredamento molto semplice per lasciare importanza al soffitto. Il
colmo del tetto è stato studiato in modo particolare per creare una finestra sul cielo. Questa linea di luce mantiene il concetto di tensione verso l’esterno di tutto il progetto.
Lo sguardo verso l’esterno non è ostacolato neppure dai balconi che permettono una splendida vista panoramica.
Interior walls have been given a plaster and emulsion paint finish, while floors are in solid oak and quartzite. Doors
and windows, which create continuity with the exterior and with the landscape, are in European conifer glulam. The bedroom has very plain furniture to give prominence to the ceiling. The ridge of the roof has been designed to create
a window on the sky. This line of light maintains the project’s concept of tension toward the exterior. As you look outside, not even the balconies obstruct the splendid view of the panorama.

CARATTERIZZATE DA SEDIMENTAZIONE E METAMORFISMO: SONO EMBLEMATICI I GNEISS PRESENTI A MORBEGNO E IN TUTTA LA BASSA VALTELLINA.
QUESTO FENOMENO È DOVUTO AD UN PROCESSO DI TRASFORMAZIONE DELLE ROCCE GIÀ SOLIDIFICATE E CONSISTE NELLA FORMAZIONE DI NUOVI MINERALI, DOVUTI ALL’EFFETTO DI ALTE TEMPERATURE E FORTI PRESSIONI.
IN VALTELLINA OLTRE LA METÀ DEL TERRITORIO È PROTETTO DA PARCHI E RISERVE CHE RENDONO QUESTA VALLATA UNA VERA E PROPRIA OASI VERDE NEL CUORE DELLE ALPI. PRODOTTI TIPICI DI GRANDE QUALITÀ, GARANTITI DAI CONSORZI DI TUTELA, FANNO DELLA VALTELLINA UNO DEI TERRITORI ALPINI PIÙ "GOLOSI": FORMAGGI, BRESAOLA, VINI E I PIÙ FAMOSI PIZZOCCHERI, SOLO PER CITARNE ALCUNI. UN GUSTO PARTICOLARE CHE SI ASSAPORA SULLE TAVOLE DELLA VALTELLINA: SAPORI ANTICHI, FRUTTO DI UNA CUCINA SEMPLICE, EREDITATA DALLE TRADIZIONI MONTANARE E CONTADINE, DERIVATA DA PRODOTTI OTTENUTI CON GRANDI SFORZI E SACRIFICI.
On entering the house, the focal point is the staircase inserted in a special area. By not going all the way to the ceiling, this area allows for the circulation of air while providing interesting, almost floating, visual continuity.
The staircase area consists of a wall with encaustic finish that winds round to take you to the floor above.
The house is on three floors, making the most of the natural slope of the mountain.
The basement is used as a garage.
On the first floor is the veranda, which is nothing more than a small greenhouse with plants (it makes the passage between inside and out less abrupt), living room, kitchen, and children’s playroom. Going up one side you come to a gallery, used for relaxation, that looks onto the living room. In the other wing is the bedroom divided in two by a thread of light created by the ridge of the roof made in glass. The architect’s bathroom design is also of interest; he treats it as if it were a small private centre for well-being. He has sought contact with nature by creating an opening that looks onto the sky where the shower is, almost as if wishing to suggest rain water.
