Nel Brasile meridionale Una casa per le vacanze dove si incontrano motivi provenzali e trdizione carioca A holiday home with Provencal motifs and Carioca tradition Progetto: Arch. Maria Christina Rinaldi e Arch. L’atmosfera da sogno è accentuata dai nomi: il comune della Praia si chiama Praia de Atlantica is one of those small towns of Brazil that seems to epitomise the idea of ‘vacation’. Its dream atmosphere is underlined by names such as Xangri-là (for the Praia municipality), the Himalayan garden dreamed up in James Milton’s book ‘Lost Horizon’, a place of amazing landscapes, without time, and ruled by peace and abundance. But this Shangri-La is 130 kilometres from Port Alegre (which is very close by Brazil’s standards), a city the name of which conjures up festive images.

The house is part of the Carmel consion. With its eucalyptus trees and ponds, the park reproduces the natural features of the terrain in a neat and orderly fashion.
The room sizes here invite both movement and relaxation. The full-height living room has large windows that turn the outside panorama into interior decor, creating an intense rapport with the surroundingnature.
Ma, più che le pareti, le Only local materials have been used: eucalyptus wood, sandstone, and while clay tiles. But it is the openings, not the walls, that really characterise the building, with large wooden casings framing the natural wood outside. The banister-free staircase acts almost as an indoor opening. In the living rooms there are two large white sofas with red, yellow, and light blue cushions. The furniture was custom-made by a cabinet-maker of Lajeado. Panels are in local araucaria wood, which has been sandblasted to bring out the grain. One of the children’s rooms. In addition to cushions decorated with figures, notice also the bright yellow bedside rug. The large slide-away French window turns the entire room into a veranda that opens onto the terrace. Se all’esterno The specchiatura and wood inserts add a geometric effect to the rooms. If on the outside the rough-hewn stone provides a timeless feel to the house, the colours used on the inside are decidedly modern. The method of construction is in line with local tradition, such as the full-view wooden beams inserted as bracing inside the walls. Contiguity and continuity with the outside can be seen in the bedroom by means of a strip of wood used in the upper part of the walls as a border. Wood has been frequently used on the interiors. The floors on the upper levels are in wood, whereas in the day areas on the lower level floors are in slabs of polished stone.
