Beyond the city and away from the artifices of modern living, at the foot of mount semprevisa (the highest in the lepini mountain range that delimits the province of frosinone to the north-east, and the agro pontino to the south-west) is this old restored oil mill. The building dates to eighteenth century and was operational up until the 1940s. Surrounded by forests of beech, hornbeam, oak and, lower down, chestnut groves, it is the ideal place to enjoy the countryside. The walls in local limestone are built using a lime and pozzolana cement. Floors and roofs in wood are made using trusses in chestnut wood, in abundance in this region, and timber retrieved from the Prima della ristrutturazione era un frantoio per la spremitura delle olive e faceva parte di un edificio padronale, anch’esso costruito alla fine del 1700, di proprietà del signore di Bassiano, paese collinare in provincia di Latina. Before restoration, the building was a mill used for the pressing of olives, and was part of a country house, also built in "La macina del frantoio, in pietra calcarea, è originaria del 1700, mentre i torchi risalgono alla fine del 1800. The grindstone dates to the eighteenth century, whereas the presses date to the end of the nineteenth century. The rotating grindstone, which crushed the olives, used to be operated by a blindfolded mule. Today this trace of history recreates, in the current living room, a feel for times gone by. The restoration within the perimeter walls, directed in the 1970s by Salvagni, a surveyor, is absolute and all-encompassing. The mill hadn’t actually been in operation for some thirty years and the it was in desperate need of restoration. Yet in order to maintain the spirit of the place, all elements in wood, likewise the handmade terracotta floor, were salvaged from the adjoining country house which was built during the same period. All the fireplaces were made with jambs and bases in chiselled limestone. What is now a stone and tempered glass table, in front of the presses, used to be a solid piece of stone with a hole in it that hung from a wall. A wooden beam was inserted in this to facilitate the final phases of the olive pressing process. " |
