On a plateau overlooking the bay of Alassio, which is part of a hill still covered with Mediterranean shrub and tree
areas, is an old country house in stone built in 1789. When it was chanced upon by the current owners during a walk, it
had been abandoned for many years and the garden was a mass of brambles. Despite this it was love at first sight.
Renza Sciutto, internationally renowned painter and sculptor, had the necessary knowledge and intellectual foresight,
along with her husband, to sense the potential for construction and seek out the proprietors. They then transformed
it into their home and place of work.

storica dello stabile, soffocata dagli interventi precedenti, spesso approssimativi e poco rispettosi dello stile composto e
tradizionale della dimora.

Their research was successful and the restoration of the building was carried out with careful and personal restoration
work, using the technical help of well-known architect Marco Melgrati, the current mayor of Alassio. Renza Sciutto designed the floor in ‘coccio pesto’ (crushed pottery) herself, which thanks to its soft texture recalls Tibetan rugs; she also designed an abstract composition of colour and stone around a shower. The restoration was not only material, the historical spirit of the site being also rediscovered. This had been suffocated by previous projects that were often improvised and had little respect for the neat and traditional style of the home.

Restoration is in line with the historical spirit of the home. The ground-floor portico, with cross vaulting, is a new addition, although pillars and vaults are so carefully designed as to be
indistinguishable from the original parts. The terrace above has a renovation of the original balustrade made with small
handcrafted terracotta columns."

In the room on the firstfloor the old frescos have been restored, while a decorative geometric motif on
the walls has been repeated in the floor pattern, made with the ‘coccio pesto’ technique, which is a mixture of coloured terracotta fragments and cements. Resting on the old Ligurian carpenter’s workbench and on a small South-American leather table are ceramic and wax creations by the artist, who has recently held an exhibition in China.

A traditional Ligurian hearth, the ‘ronfou’, which in the past was used for cooking, has been restored.
Beneath the large hood and fire grille, symmetrical niches have been made in the thick wall, which are
useful for placing wooden objects. Old utensils, keys, pans, and jars create a pictorial whole."

The master bedroom has Louis Philippe style furniture. The room connects to a bathroom, which has a wall around a shower decorated with a fluid multi-coloured motif in polished terracotta fragments and ceramic. Another artistic touch is the iron and wax sculpture by the lady of the house. The eighteenth century doors are painted in delicate pastel colours, and waxed.

I sanitari, risolti come perfette forme solide
geometriche, sono quelli disegnati da Philippe Stark.

picture in plastic and resin; other sculptures by the artist are in iron and wax. The sanitary fixtures,
perfectly solid geometrical shapes, have been designed by Philippe Stark."
