In the US, spas have been used for some time, in Italy they are becoming popular thanks to the initiative of some companies which, on account of specializing in swimming pool manufacture, stay abreast of market trends. These, then, are mini-swimming pools: luxuriously finished in their minimum details, covered with noble woods, illuminated at night by romantic underwater lights, and often fitted out with hi-fi equipment which, if placed on a panoramic terrace or veranda – or in the garden – offer unforgetta-ble moments. Inviting friends to dinner before subsequently bathing together whilst enjoying a whirlpool massage is slowly also becoming fashionable in Italy. Spas are also instruments of mental and physical well-being. Indeed, with the the help of an expert trai-ner, it is possible to practice water relaxing techniques, often imported from the east, and adapted to suit western needs. Watsu, literally water and shiatsu, is a technique that combines the beneficial effects of a massage with those of water. The ‘watsuer’ places himself in a listening position, inviting the other into a so-called “cradle” and instilling a process of self-healing. Other methods include balancing, massage, meditation and breathing; waichi transfers the martial art of tai chi chuan into water; woga (water yoga) and, finally, free-flow (water-dancing).
