Sobriety and a conceptual elegance are the dominant features of this living room. Shapes are traditional and colours are subdued, ranging from yellow or pale green (nicely matching the wood of the walls) to the very pleasant bright brown. As with many other houses in Macugnaga, this attractive home also draws its inspiration from the alpine culture of the Walser, a people of Germanic origin that arrived in Italy more than 800 years ago and has maintained its ancient traditions, original customs and dialect. For the Walser people, the house has always been the heart of the community, a centre for the extended family, and it adopts a central role in daily life. It is with this in mind that the renovation has been carried out.
It has tried to adapt the old structure to modern living needs, while respecting both its architectural features and the original distribution of space. The original structure was typical of the Walser building tradition. It is made without structural vertical elements, but with solid wood trunks piled horizontally and attached to each other by means of joins.
On the north wall, without windows, is a remarkable rug dating to the 1800s hanging as if it were a tapestry; it is no doubt a family heirloom as with much of the furniture used here. It is also the only visible decorative object. The small traditional crimped pelmets have a tendency to merge with the bed cover, which in the main bedroom has a pattern of small flowers and in the children’s room has a tartan motif; both are finished with a matching hem. The functional kitchen hides the modernity of steel inside solid wood shelves. There are plenty of large copper pans in which wholesome calorie-rich dishes are prepared in the Walser tradition.
There, in Glis, is the Walser’s most venerated shrine of the Madonna, and a chapel dedicated to Saint Theodulus, patron saint of the Wallis. Only by knowing their cultural background can we understand the ‘Walser style’ in architecture, with its rigorous antiquity and its firm anchorage to an often harsh reality, also in terms of climate. Austerity and sobriety are the salient features of their interiors, which concede nothing to frivolity and fashion. It is not too much to say that you breathe an air, if not mystical, then at least religious in their houses. This is typical of large families ‘brought up in the fear of good’ as they used to say. Solidity and practicality is the Walser interpretation of the house, which has always been made to be perfectly functional.
