Mete di passeggiate nel verde, luoghi di sosta lungo i percorsi o semplicemente ambienti riparati ricavati nel verde: pergole e gazebo sono preziosi per regalare ombra e frescura in qualunque punto del giardino. Possono essere edificati isolati, così da valorizzare gli ampi spazi aperti, oppure tra gli alberi, magari lungo viali e sentieri come “tappe” del cammino. Possono essere ricavati anche sfruttando le pareti esterne dell’abitazione: in questo caso diventano
un’appendice della casa e prolungano il piacere di vivere all’aperto. Sia le pergole, strutture più semplici, sia i gazebo, più articolate, sono caratteristici dell’architettura del paesaggio italiano e possono essere realizzati in muratura, in pietra, in legno, in metallo o combinando insieme tutti questi materiali. Le coperture delle pergole sono generalmente più semplici, di solito in tessuto o cannicciato, mentre per i gazebo si utilizza molto spesso il legno impermeabilizzato o i materiali plastici.
Pergolas and gazebos are invaluable for the shade and freshness they provide wherever they may be in the garden, and they can be used as focal points in the greenery, rest areas along paths, or just simple shelters in the egetation.
They can stand alone such as to enhance the look of the wide-open spaces, or they can be placed between trees, perhaps along paths or walkways, providing stopping points along the way. Alternatively they can be built against the outside walls of the house. In this case they become an annexe of the house, prolonging the pleasure of outdoor living. Both pergolas (simple structures) and gazebos (more complex architectural designs) are characteristic of Italian landscape gardening, and they can be made in brickwork, stone, wood or metal or a combination of all of these materials. Coverings for pergolas are generally simpler, being usually in fabric or reed. Gazebos on the other hand very often use waterproofed wood or plastic materials.

L’angolo del fai-da-te
Per realizzare una pergola o un gazebo è bene sapere che la sua altezza va compresa tra i m. 2,50 e i 3,50, con una lunghezza massima che varia a seconda del materiale scelto. In generale non si dovrebbero superare mai, per ragioni
di sicurezza, i m.4-5, altrimenti è consigliabile prevedere più campate affiancate. La struttura orizzontale di solito è costituita da listelli in legno o in metallo posati parallelamente tra loro o incrociati con un interasse minimo di cm.50-60. L’ancoraggio a terra delle strutture verticali varia a seconda della dimensione della struttura e del materiale impiegato. Nel caso si tratti di legno, i montanti possono essere direttamente fissati nel terreno, ancora meglio se fissati prima in un basamento di calcestruzzo inserito nel suolo oppure con un’imbullonatura in una staffa di metallo.

To make a pergola or a gazebo remember it should be between 2.5 and 3.5 metres high, with a length that depends on the material selected. For safety reasons, length should not exceed 4 – 5 metres; if it does, then adjacent bays
are recommended. The horizontal structure is usually in wood or metal strips placed parallel or crosswise with a minimum distance between strips of 50 – 60 cm. Ground anchorage of the vertical parts depends on the size of the structure and on the material used. If it is made of wood, vertical supports can be fixed directly into the ground; even better would be to fasten them to a concrete foundation inserted in the ground; alternatively they can be bolted to metal stakes.
