Large stone sheets and imposing wooden trunks are the peculiar features of the fireplace in the country house. In this
case it is inserted in a room made warm from the gilded nuances of the wood, which covers the ceiling and makes the
staircase climbing to the mezzanine. Nice red sofas are located in semicircle to form a large relax and conversation area. But the farmhouse must have a “sophisticated” look that can be reached by many small objects positioned with care, plants or dry-flowers bunches or ancient tools of the country tradition. The cream-coloured walls that highlight the whole furnishing brighten the room illustrated in these pages.

The large fireplace made with big stones framed by old beams. The architect Luigi Vietti, who cured its realisation,
found these stones of alluvium origin that are perfectly oval and used them for the wall containing the fireplace. The result is very unusual and charming. White dominates in the small picture, which is interrupted by the long beams with sinuous run that horizontally crosses the whole wall. The third example shows another exclusive realisation by Luigi Vietti. The bedroom wall, which is completely covered by old beams, has a large fireplace under the window. The hood is contained into the wall thickness on the side of the window with a very interesting effect.

The fireplace: the living presence of fire

In pre-Hellenic times, the fireplace represented the symbol of the house and of the family that used to gather round it
as recounted in Homer’s poems. It was called atriumby the Romans, meaning the main room in the house with a fire
burning in the middle and with
a hole in the ceiling for letting smoke out.
Since then, the fireplace has remained basically the same in terms of technical notions up until last century,
although its shape and decorations forming its internal coating have undergone a few changes in keep with the
taste of the times. The scarce thermal return (approximately 30%) of an open fireplace, with the ever changing spectacle of fire on display but with a considerable loss of heat up the flue, has prompted the design and manufacture of fireplaces that can retain heat with a 75-80% return. On the inside, the fireplace consists of a single steel or cast iron insulating monobloc with wool, stone or glass jackets, whereas it features a galvanized sheet iron coating as well as a decorative coating on the outside. They can be connected parallel to central heating in combination with an oil-fired or gas boiler or they can run independently as the only source of heat, distributing warm air in the other rooms
through a channelling system. Some types are also equipped with a heat exchanger for the production of sanitary warm air as well as high tech safety devices. The fireplace is also equipped with heat resistant glass screens, thus letting us constantly enjoy the spectacle of fire. Prior to buying a fireplace, one must first of all ascertain
where the flue and the chimney pot are located exactly, since they represent the leading factors particularly when
the house has already been built. The place, shape, size, typology and section of both the flue and the chimney pot must be assessed first. Next, easy access to wood supplies and storage must be taken into account, too.
The actual size of a house must also be considered; an inbuilt electric fireplace is not enough to warm up for
instance a 300 square metres rustic house arranged on three floors. A 45 W boiler is at least needed.

It is the inside of a Walser house, the typical ancient county house of the Valsesia. This farmhouse was built 400 years ago and was restored in the full respect of original features but adapted to modern needs. At the upper floor there is the day area, where the wonderful play of beams composing the roof and walls is highlighted. This large room is used as dining and living room, which are ideally subdivided from the sofa at the centre. The fireplace towers with all its majesty with bottom and fire mouth in stones covered by a big black-wooden beam. In contrast the hood was white-plastered in order to make the room less severe. The different nuances of wood that create chromatic plays have to be underlined.
