The renovation of part of a villa in the centre of Catania, dating to 1830, respects the existing structure while making it modern and comfortable.
This villa is on Via Etnea, located in a position that bordered with the countryside when it was built, but which is now considered to be in the city centre. Despite numerous renovations that have separated it into several living units, the villa still preserves its neoclassical structure with large rooms and high arch ceilings. The new landlords, given that they only own a part of the property, have decided to adapt it to their needs by making better use of the height, so they have created mezzanines. The rustic barbecue area is given a touch of elegance by means of a short column. The garden, much smaller than it originally was, has a barbecue protected by a small roof, and connects by means of an external staircase to the kitchen area on the first floor. The small lawn at the back of the house is interspersed with large lava stones. Given that eclecticism lies at the heart of this renovation project, there is plenty of autonomy between the old part and the modern furniture. This is especially evident in the living room, which is dominated by a highly modern staircase with mezzanine attached. Here the large neoclassical vaults look over a decidedly modern structure that contains furniture with modern lines but with classical textiles and details. La soppalcatura ha una struttura in ferro, calcolata per avere un ammezzato The strong cross vaults are those of the original construction dating to around 1830, and so conceived for a late neoclassical salon. The kitchen is open space and has been totally redesigned. It is located on the optical axis of two robust walls (on one side a facing brick wall, and on the other the lava stones, with plaster removed, of the old structure), whereas its work area, thanks to a rotation of the axes, is diagonal to the adjacent areas. It is an act of freedom, an attractive idea that adds dynamism to a plan otherwise destined to succumb to the power of the villa’s neoclassicism. Completing the kitchen is an exit onto the small terrace of the barbecue (an excellent way of getting around the smoke problem), from which one can walk down the staircase to the garden. Many furniture items and decorative objects in the Avendo deciso di raddoppiare lo spazio dividendo in due l’altezza smisurata degli interni con una soletta, la scelta di porre la zona notte nella parte alta era conseguente alla collocazione del soggiorno a livello dell’entrata. Le volte, Having decided to double the space by dividing in two the immense height of the interiors by means of a mezzanine, the decision to place the sleeping area in the upper part came owing to the decision to place the living room at the entrance level. Vaults over beds have the same psychological effect as a four-poster bed, whereas the flat ceiling of the guest bedroom uses a plasterboard curvilinear element to soften the volume.
