Mi piacevano le risaie e mi piace il riso, forse era destino che venissi ad abitare proprio qui.”
“When I was traveling here, in the peaceful Biella area and among its rice fields, I felt a powerful attraction towards these beautiful foundries. I remember that I used to enter there at night – when the furnaces were silent – and work. It was pure art. I used to love rice fields and I like rice very much, so I think it was already written somewhere that I should come to live right here.”

Starting with the complete remaking of Palazzo Invernizzi – located in Corso Venezia in Milan – I embarked on a new artistic path that led me, trough the rediscovery, during the Fifties, of the French art of the eighteenth century, to the eclecticism of the last decades.”

All’inizio ero affiscinato dall’idea di acquistare una casa pendente, come la torre di Pisa, che una mia amica mi aveva segnalato, poi ho optato per questo gruppo che risale al ‘700, decisamente più stabile. Nel giardino e all’interno ho sistemato le mie opere del periodo etnocentrico.”
“The first time I had been in Seggiano was because of an art exhibition. I was there with my students from Munich. At the beginning, I was completely fascinated by the idea of buying a leaning house, like the leaning tower in Pisa, that a friend of mine had shown me. Then I decided to buy a more stable cluster of houses of the eighteenth century. In the garden and inside the house I have placed all the artworks of my ethnocentric period.”

In this house I’ve placed a lot of paintings – all of them artworks of friends of mine – and all the things I collect, all my traveling souvenirs: handicraft objects quite inexpensive, but for me they are priceless.”

“Questa villa, costruita negli anni ’50 e ristrutturata nel ’70 è di concezione razionalista. Per quanto riguarda gli interni ho esasperato il concetto di open space dividendo gli spazi con una serie di pannelli scorrevoli. Due di questi, realizzati da Barbanti, chiudono gli spazi a fianco del doppio camino separando la camera da letto dalsoggiorno.”

hile in the interiors I tried to bring the open space concept to its extreme by using sliding panels to divide the areas. Two of these panels – designed by Barbanti – have been placed behind the double fireplace, dividing this way the master bedroom from the living.”

“I really fell in love with the whole atmosphere of this house, so truly and deeply romantic, surrounded by the green hills of Menaggio. During its restoration, I tried to recreate this feeling in its interiors with the use of crystal chandeliers and candle holders and nineteenth-century style padded furniture.”
