The bathroom is the environment where we take care of our body, where we relax under a hot jet of water or dipped in a bathtub full of regenerating foam, where we make physical exercise every morning or we try to make ourselves more goodlooking and appreciable: it is therefore essential that we perform all of these activities under adequate lighting, in terms of both quality and quantity. First of all, the quality of light must be compatible with the human eye, which likes moderately warm light: incandescent and halogen lamps are ideal, as their light is more similar to the Sun, but also energysaving lamps can be functional and comfortable, provided you choose a warm light model. You should also take into account the combination with natural light, which in the morning and during the day is a common and variable factor: also for this reason, warm light should be preferred as it causes no deterioration with either lighting solutions. Quantity must be adjusted according to function: if 75 lux are enough for the entire environment, if evenly radiated from a ceiling or hanging fixture, you will need 500 lux to make up and shave, possibly emitted by two sources at the sides of the mirror (elsewhere they would cast unpleasant shadows, while in this way they perfectly light up the face): such quantity is necessary for the make-up to perform the accurate operations required by this daily rite (again, consider the quality of light according to the destination you are going to reach: your make-up will look different if you make up under a certain kind of light and then move to a place with totally different lighting, with definitely poor results…). As for shaving, it is a matter of being accurate and safe (razors, even modern ones, can cut…). Then, you must create a suitable contrast between background light and the accent light: so, not only 75 lux all around and 500 near the mirror, but more attention spots with 150 lux in the area where you take physical exercise, on the shower or bathtub, coming from carefully positioned spots. Finally, safety should be considered: the lamps must be protected from splashes that would cause them to blow up, and also for the lighting fixtures it is recommended to choose moisture and splash-resistant models, especially if you install them within two meters from the taps, or even tight lamps, which you can place anywhere (but still not access when you are wet).
