Il mosaico, un antichissima arte…Mosaic, an ancient trough…

Servizio: Elisa Castiglioni

How is it possible not to be enchanted by the hundreds of thousands of tiny coloured pieces composing highly complex friezes and designs that are found in valuable materials such as marble or glass with its shiny, alluring transparencies. There is no doubt that one of the most refined and popular wall covering used today is mosaic. In fact, its myriad of materials and infinite colours can be used for bathrooms, kitchens or even, a trend that is becoming increasingly popular, to decorate public places or trendy venues such as restaurants, bars or showrooms. Mosaic art is amongst the oldest techniques adopted to cover and decorate walls and floors and it is also, perhaps to this millennial appeal, nowadays often interpreted in a modern-day key, that it owes its allure. Mosaic art was imported from Islam, or however from the east and involved the use of closely set, usually variously coloured small pieces of marble-like material which, when skilfully combined, gave a polychromed effect and formed geometric designs (never figurative, as imposed by iconoclastic Islamic religion) such as stars, polygons or arcs. In Italy, the Romans had already begun to use foreign marble tesserae originating from numerous countries in the empire. These were of an extraordinary beauty and colour and were used to create the various “opus”, i.e. a combination of small pieces used to create coverings, friezes or floors; enamel (a coloured vitreous material) was also frequently used to achieve particular effects of shine or colour, either combined with marble or for glass coverings alone.

The use of mosaic embodies one of the earliest cultural patrimonies, retaining ancient decorative techniques and introducing new ones such as, for example, the use of computer graphs to develop patterns and transform them into small tesserae. Furthermore, technological progress has improved the qualitative level of materials meaning that the product can now be adapted to suit modern industrial production requirements. Additionally, various methods to make laying more precise, rapid and economic have been adopted. These include the pre-assembly of numerous tesserae (usually “portions” measuring approximately 30×30 cm.) or even entire friezes and decorations on a mesh support. This soft support has the advantage of ensuring that the tesserae can be laid on all types of surface, even curved or irregular ones. But it was with the eastern Roman empire and consequently through Byzantine contact, that the art of mosaic work became more and more widely used by western populations with Ravenna, in Italy, becoming, during the reign of emperor Justinian, the centre of the most refined, spectacular mosaics.

The use of mosaic coverings, which throughout history, in terms of popularity, has been subject to “ups-and-downs”, ranging from the Byzantine era, as previously mentioned, to the ‘50’s with a passage through the splendour of Art Deco creations, is currently experiencing a spectacular revival, and has become a kind of “passion” not only for designers but also for end users. In Italy, there are companies boasting years of tradition in mosaic production thereby perpetuating history whilst simultaneously developing highly advanced technological research. The market offers a wide range of products such as, for example, Vetricolor, a multi-purpose glass mosaic with tesserae measuring 20×20 millimetres that can be used for public or residential purposes. Gemme, also a type of glass mosaic, is however, characterized by special transparencies and copper lights achieved by means of a manual process, typical of Venetian tradition, in which glass and a very hard semi-precious stone called Avventurina are fused. Then there is the highly valuable Gold mosaic, consisting of 24 karat gold leaf enclosed between two layers of special glass. Furthermore, there are numerous precompounded mixtures that combine various types of mosaic in their entire colour range, to create a truly vast palette.

As can be seen in these pictures, the use of mosaic lends itself to the creation of a wide variety of different rooms. It is possible to create a high-tech atmosphere by combining it with metal accessories having a clean-cut line or to soften a room in order to give it an almost “new age” look by introducing elements in natural materials or plants. Furthermore, it could also be fun to recreate a classic atmosphere with patterns and friezes of Greek inspiration.

Another well-known Italian company is Sicis which, apart from perpetuating the mosaic-making tradition is also located in one of the most renowned mosaic making cities in the world – Ravenna. Sicis offers a wide range of mosaic products with tesserae ranging from 15×15 mm upwards which can be used for all types of coverings including interiors, exteriors, public or private places. In fact, the Murano Smalto Mosaic and the Iridium Mosaic collections are characterized by high resistance to abrasion, frost, light and chemical aggression. The Murano Smalto Mosaics are made from an opaque glass paste and have a semi-shiny surface finish available in over fifty colours whilst the Iridium Mosaic series consists of semi-transparent composite glass with an ultra-shiny surface finish and iridescent effects available in about forty different colours.

10×10 mm tesserae formats are also available on request thus allowing designers and users to indulge their fancies not only in terms of colour but also in terms of size, patterns and decorations. Last but not least are the wide range of natural stone mosaics such as the magnificent Sassi del Piave di Cottoveneto, consisting of tesserae measuring 25×25 millimetres, mounted on netting in modules measuring 30×30 cm and available in the most beautiful Italian and foreign stones. In conclusion, why not enjoy yourselves by inventing not only patterns for wall covering purposes but also for sinks, tubs, showers, small partitions and whatever else takes your fancy in unusual shapes and colours daringly combined or shaded.

Come è posato in opera il mosaico
How mosaic is laid

A layer of glue, possibly having a rubber latex base, is applied in a uniform manner using a toothed spatula. Where glass mosaics are in question, given the particular semi-transparency of the material, it is preferable to always use white glues which enhance the depth of colours. The mosaic sheets are laid (the tesserae are almost always preassembled on a mesh support) one next to the other evidencing the joint which should measure approximately 2 mm. A wood or rubber stopper is used to ensure adhesion of the material all the tesserae are levelled out using the same stopper. Once the glue has dried, all the spaces between the tesserae are filled with cement grout or another special product for joints.
