What issues does a designer consider when designing an attic space? Does a double-pitched ceiling
change matters or does the project basically remain the same? In other words, does the attic have a special ‘personality’ that should always be respected? What do the architects say?

L’Arch. Marco Vantusso dello Studio Vantusso e Colombo

Quindi in città abitare in mansarda

The attic has always had a personality of its own. I would even go so far as to say that the attic often corresponds
to the character of its inhabitant. If a customer has opted for an attic, this means he/she has opted for a specific way of life and is willing to adapt both with regards aesthetics and functionality. Sure enough, because of the sloping ceiling attics are often less easy to use; making up for this is their strong visual appeal. There are two possible project types: if the attic is fit for use, the tendency is to preserve what is possible; if on the other hand it needs to be refurbished, then the entire structure needs to sanitized, heat and sound insulation applied, and heating and cooling systems installed.
If the rooms available are all mansarded, you can draw on the concept of alcove or love-nest; if on the other hand the attic has a penthouse, then it follows that the lower floor should have a more aesthetic design, using it as a living room, and the upper floor should be more intimate and used as a studio-cumsleeping area.
One attractive element of the attic is of course the beams in full view; even when these have to be remade using new technological materials such as glulam, they nevertheless preserve the appeal of wood which provides warmth while conveying a feeling a protection and welcome. All this fits in perfectly with the intimist concept of attic, and almost all our customers want to maintain this.
In some special circumstances the beams are painted white, but generally speaking we prefer to maintain the natural look of wood.
One thing we definitely do not do is darken it with dyes because dark beams often make a ceiling look oppressive.
One typical design feature of attics is to make functional spaces out of the areas where wall height is reduced owing to the slope in the roof.
Wherever possible, we use the most ingenious methods to make the best possible use of volumes that would otherwise go unused, with recourse to various tricks such as sliding panels and extractable trolleys that come down diagonally.

Attics are of particular interest to me because they are the part of the building where there is usually a considerable
view, which in taller buildings can be dominating.
So in cities, living in an attic often means ‘taking your neck out of the bag’.
Whenever I renovate an attic, the first thing I do is place the interior space in direct relation with the exterior by increasing the number of windows and skylights.
As architects we prefer to be projected outwards, possibly in all directions, rather than being cooped up inside a box.
Although bearing in mind that the appeal of attics comes from the sloping ceiling and the beams, I try first and foremost to make the most of the exterior views, not only to liberate man of his innate interest in self but also to let as much light as possible come into the home.
Our psychological and physical well-being is dependent on all these issues.
Having the roof at hand means you can also make the most of solar energy using modern technology and, in less restricted cases, you can create skylights, dormer windows and terraces of various sorts.
It is always gratifying to see a satisfied client smiling because the architect has known how to interpret his/her innermost desires, such as that of living in a space in its entirety.
Looking towards the exterior is inherent to a positive and optimistic personality.
I always hope that my clients belong to this character type rather than one of introversion whereby they close up on themselves in dingy and badly lit spaces. If in addition to the attic there is also a penthouse, then for me this is a very exciting situation. As designers we usually tend to be one step ahead of our clients, because we always have a
strong urge to remodel spaces such that they do not look dull and are full of interesting perspectives.
And if you can have various levels that interrupt the limitation of a purely horizontal space, so much the better.
