Using the characteristics of the terrain, the architects have obtained a large amount of space from a limited surface area. Three magically intersecting floors. Il luogo è Ippendorf, un villaggio non lontano As often happens in architecture, necessity often leads to an original solution. Restrictions spur creativity and lead to new and interesting ideas. Here the problem was that the area that could be built upon was a square with sides of about 12 metres, and the side towards the street could not show more than one habitable level. But the owners wanted a big house that would provide comfortable living both for them and their three children. They also wanted rooms for them to be able to carry out their business. The location is Ippendorf, a village not far from the city of Cologne, along the River Rhine in Germany.
Lo studio dell’orientamento sfrutta The frame that holds up such a large glass wall can be in steel or aluminium. The greater degree of lightness and relative plasticity of the latter makes it particularly suited to coupling with glass, and it provides good manoeuvrability for the elements. Glass walls of these sizes usually allow for the opening of only a few elements. The glass acts as a façade, and the transparency takes on the role of external cladding. A study into the orientation makes the most of the technical properties of the glass. Four columns frame the channel of light and central space of the building. Left, on the intermediate floor, which contains the entrance from the road, there is an open-space living room, dining room, and kitchen. The staircase (above)
On the interior, the ceiling arch is accompanied by wooden beams. These, together with the staircase that brings together the three levels, provide dynamism to a light-filled room thanks to the many openings and the sheer size of the open central volume. From the glass wall, you can see the spires of Cologne Cathedral. The architectural design comes full circle with the large window. This juts out rather like a bow-window in an exterior volume that has a slight rotation underlined by the use of yellow. So from a limited site this project bursts forth with playful creativity. Neighbouring houses solved the problem using the classic building type comprising one floor covered by a double-pitched attic roof. Pizzini and Luxemburg have come up with a much more original solution. By using the slight slope in the terrain, the street side has a one-floor facade with a roof that rises in the shape of a sinuous wave (the section of which looks like a woman’s head of hair with kiss-curls). This is used to create three levels to the rear of the house, the basement floor being completely hidden from view on the street side. Here you can find the children’s areas, including small bedrooms and plenty of play space. On the intermediate level, the living room opens onto a double-height space illuminated by a glass wall that makes the entire façade transparent; the parents’ rooms are at the top. Beneath the skylight, which consists of a central opening in the roof, a channel of light lets you see from top to bottom through the various levels; this provides direct contact between parents and children throughout the day. The interior rooms provide a profound feeling of freedom. Left, the banister-free staircase is an expression of this freedom, as is the transparency of the rooms. Below, the master bedroom, with window that looks onto the pergola and hammock. One of the other two rooms on the ground floor that look towards the main façade.
