Uno chalet inglese- An English Chalet

A house in the mountains is a dream to fulfill for many people, whether it is right in the center of Cortina or lost in the mountains and accessible only with a snow-mobile. This is a refuge on week-ends, alone or with friends, surrounded by the warmth of the fireplace and by the unique atmosphere that was created with time.

Surrounded by snow, this splendid chalet welcomes us with the warmth of its timber. Rigorously covered with dark wood rafters, in contrast with the white windows and doors, it perfectly mixes with the landscape around it. The owner, very fond of wood, wanted to make this material the strong piece of his house, on the walls and ceilings, where the repeated pattern is the “caisson”, present in the living area where it creates a warm and cozy atmosphere. Even the fabrics, chosen carefully, have the same pattern in all the rooms, from curtains to carpets up to the stair carpet on the stairs that go up to the first floor, again surrounded by the warmth of wood.

On the double previous page, the big and bright living room, thanks to the presence of the windows that open onto the terrace with a splendid view of the Swiss mountains. The main point of the house is the fireplace (side photo). Made in 1721 originally from Switzerland the fireplace is entirely decorated. The furniture includes various antique pieces. The sofas are English, the stripped carpet of Souky de Ganay comes from Belgium. Red English curtains and paintings from the Eighteenth century representing Swiss landscapes make the room look very elegant. Tulip and azalea vases brighten the room. By the living room, the dining room (on this page). The table and the chairs are from Provence, but the most important element is this piece of furniture form a Tibet temple, entirely decorated with flower patterns.

This bathroom is certainly unique (above and to the side), and the wood panel replaces the traditional tiles. More than a simple bathroom, we could call this an area dedicated to well-being where you can relax. The lighting system was created through spotlights fixes in the matchboard ceiling and on the side of the mirror above the double sink marked by soft and absolutely classical lines. Container furniture and shelves were created through niches in order to uniform the environment with the wood facing and the stave ceiling. A dark curtain with stripped English fabric was chosen for this room too. It is tied to the sides with a “sleeve” of the same color. The wood chair and table are locally made in Switzerland.

The same harmony extends to the bedrooms on the upper floor. The scheme develops from the “blue” room – where the cloths with different patterns but identical background mix with each other without clashing – to the “green” one, all based on green shades brightened up by paintings in pale colors and the bright yellow armchair and foot-resting pouf with flower decorations. The headboards of the beds are simply padded in the blue room and made of decorated wood in the green room. Both beds feature a rich valance, also made of cloth, that elegantly “dresses” the environment. With its sophisticated simplicity, cloths, wood pieces and antique furniture, this house is the result of an accurate study for the combination of styles and colors that create a warm and refined environment.
