Un ufficio tra le nuvole

Progetto / Project

Architecture has crossed the boundaries of luxury. The project we are going to present is not simply a comfort that one can afford.

“You will seem to be walking on the clouds”.

Shall consider a veterinary, who does at home part of his work and who loves to relax looking at the moon and the stars; shall add a localization so beautiful that it takes your breath away and an innovative architect: the result is a building that not only offers a spectacular view but seems to become itself metaphor of the vault of heaven. The need of the customer was to widen his house and make room for a studio. The house develops on two levels and is built on some kind of stilts that counterbalance the difference of level of the lower ground. The office is on the upper floor and is detached from the rest of the rooms through a narrow corridor with glass walls, thus creating a division, not only physical but also and above all mental between the home-area and the studio-area. The South prospect permits to capture a wonderful panoramic view thanks to sliding French doors at full height.

The glass

Material consisting essentially of silicates, the glass looks like an unformed, homogeneous mass, hard, brittle, transparent and waterproof. It has a considerable mechanic resistance and is a good electric insulator. It is also resistant against chemical agents with the exception of hydrofluoric acid and of the concentrated alkali. In short, the ideal material for furnishing elements like the bookcase Marciana by Glas, designed by M. Cazzaro and F. Zecchin. The structural profiles, arch-shaped and aluminium painted, support tempered crystal shelves through steel tie-beams, adjustable to height and available with transparent, glazed or lacquered finishing.

The North prospect, instead, has been studied in order to protect the house from violent winds typical of this area; it has been built out of reinforced concrete and the windows have very few horizontal openings placed in key-points, which consent a high energy conservation by capturing and keeping the heat of the sun. In the plan, the design of the house has a curvilinear shape symbolizing the moon. In the area reserved to home work, Price uses wire ropes: using them vertically, they support crystal shelves, while using them horizontally, they act as parapet in front of the sliding French doors. The handrail is made out of chromium-plated steel and has a lightly curvilinear shape too. The work surface is made out of tempered glass and is virtually invisible. The ceiling has been painted so to recall the sky and to emphasize more the “naturalistic” characteristic of the intervention: “You will seem to be walking on the clouds”, it was Price’s thought, and in fact you just need to look at the photographs of the house to prove he is right.
