È la risultante della sintesi che l’architetto Steven Kanner ha concepito volendo conciliare da un lato l’amore per il mare, dall’altro il legame nei confronti della tradizione dei committenti. Un’opera architettonica unica quanto suggestiva.

It is the result of the synthesis that the architect Steven Kanner has conceived: he wanted to reconcile on one hand love for sea, on the other hand bonds with customers’ tradition. An architectural work as unique as evocative.

Non è certo da tutti avere la possibilità di lavorare guardando l’incantevole panorama offerto dall’oceano, ma un uomo d’affari americano ha realizzato questo sogno di molti grazie all’Arch. Steven Kanner, che ha progettato per lui un’incantevole villetta nel sud della California, con una piccola zona lavoro nel sottotetto. Kanner ha dovuto conciliare i gusti del committente, amante del mare e dello stile nautico, con quelli della moglie, più tradizionalista; ne è risultata un’abitazione di ispirazione “marinaresca”, in cui stili diversi si mescolano tra di loro. Il prospetto posteriore è caratterizzato da particolari serramenti di forma circolare, alcuni fissi e altri apribili, che a volte si intersecano tra di loro e a volte smussano gli spigoli della costruzione. Nella mente di Kanner questi cerchi rappresentano una doppia metafora: da una parte gli oblò delle navi, dall’altra le bolle come quelle che l’ossigeno forma nell’acqua. I colori dominanti nell’arredamento sono il bianco e il blu, in tutte le sue tonalità e sfumature.

Tutto l’ambiente è pervaso da una luce che sembra azzurra come l’oceano.
The whole environment is pervaded by a light that seems blue like the ocean.

Il soggiorno, arredato con un divano candido affiancato, nella zona pranzo, da un tavolo rotondo in cristallo con sedie rigorosamente blu, è parzialmente a doppia altezza. La zona studio domina la sala dall’alto del soppalco, che è raggiungibile grazie a una scala a chiocciola che termina con un parapetto cristallino. Sempre in cristallo sono realizzate le lastre che fanno da balaustra al soppalco. Utilizzando per lo più materiali di colore chiaro o trasparente, Kanner è riuscito a creare un’atmosfera “acquatica”, resa ancor più efficace dalla presenza delle onde, visibili dai serramenti e così imponenti da entrare quasi in casa. La scrivania, anch’essa in cristallo, è servita da sedie tipo Charles Eames; l’illuminazione notturna è garantita da una lampada a stelo con braccio orientabile e da piccoli faretti a basso voltaggio, posizionati a soffitto. Poco distante dalla zona studio, un comodo divano, anch’esso azzurro, sembra voler ribadire che con un’ambientazione di questo tipo anche il lavoro può diventare un’attività rilassante.

Transparent crystal like sea waves…

It is surely unlike everyone to have the possibility to work looking at the enchanting panorama offered by the ocean, but an American business man has fulfilled many people’s dream thanks to Architect Steven Kanner, who has planned for him an enchanting cottage in the south of California , with a small work area in the attic. Kanner had to reconcile the buyer’s tastes, sea and nautical style lover, with those of his wife, more traditionalist; it resulted a house of “seafaring” inspiration, in which different styles mix up together. The back prospect is characterized by particular circle- shaped windows, some fixed, others that can be opened, sometimes intersecting with each other and sometimes rounding off the corners of the building. In Kanner’s mind these circles represent a double metaphor: on one hand the ship portholes, on the other hand bubbles like those that oxygen forms into water. The dominant colours in the furniture are white and blue, in all their tones and shades.

La seduta Movi di Mondini garantisce il contatto permanente con lo schienale ed è dotata di un supporto lombare regolabile in altezza; il suo sedile arrotondato previene il sovraccarico del sistema venoso ed i suoi meccanismi di sostegno hanno un supporto oscillante con punto di rotazione avanzato e sono regolabili sul peso e sulla posizione della persona. The chair For those who work sitting, the chair is not only an accessory but a tool that assures one’s own health, protecting it from postural risks and from physical weariness. The seat Movi by Mondini guarantees the permanent contact with the back and is equipped with a lumbar support adjustable in height; its rounded seat prevent the overload of the venous system and its support mechanisms have an oscillating support with an advanced rotating point; they are adjustable according to the weight and position of the person.

The living room, furnished with a white sofa, put in the dining room close to a round crystal table with rigorously blue chairs, is partially at double height. The studio area dominates the living room from the high intermediate floor, reachable through a spiral staircase that ends with a crystal clear parapet. Always out of crystal are the slabs that act as balustrade on the intermediate floor. Using for the most part materials of light or transparent colours, Kanner succeeded in creating an “aquatic” atmosphere, made some more efficacious thanks to the presence of waves, visible from windows and so impressive that almost seem to enter the house. The desk, out of crystal as well, is furnished with chairs, Charles Eames type; the night lighting isguaranteed by a standard lamp with an adjustable arm and little spotlights of low voltage, that can be inserted into the ceiling. Not very far from the studio area, a comfortable sofa, blue too, seems to confirm that in such an environment work can become a relaxing activity as well.
