"Prima dell’intervento di ristrutturazione solo gli ultimi due piani della grande casa erano utilizzati come abitazione, mentre i due livelli sottostanti avevano la funzione di depositi e cantine.
Before restoration, only the last two floors of the large house were in use. The two lower levels were used as storerooms and canteens."

Perfettamente conservato, Il piccolo borgo di Tignano può essere considerato uno dei migliori esempi di villaggio fortificato d’altura del Medio Evo. E’ arroccato intorno a un castelletto che domina dall’alto la campagna tra Siena e Firenze ed è protetto da massicce mura a impianto circolare. Proprio qui, lungo le antiche mura fortificate, è stata ricavata questa casa di pietra e cotto.

Perfectly preserved, the small town of Tignano is arguably one of the best surviving examples of raised fortified villages from the Middle Ages. The town itself has been built around a small castle, protected by large circular walls, which looks out onto the countryside of Siena and Florence. Along these fortifications we come across this stone and terracotta house.

The large house is set on four floors and has the typical features of a tower-house,
the original structure of which dates to the twelfth and thirteenth centuries."

In questi borghi antichi che si sono sviluppati nel tempo con lo spontanea e graduale aggiunta di volumi sempre diversi, anche le case mostrano una sovrapposizione di locali e spazi dalle funzioni o dalle origini differenti. In questa abitazione, per esempio, le grandi pareti di pietra sono la testimonianza delle antiche mura del borgo, mentre il soggiorno-veranda, un tempo adibito a fienile, è stato aggiunto recentemente. Inutile dire che il rispetto per questi “segni” del tempo è stato il principio che ha guidato tutta la ristrutturazione. Il primo intervento ha riguardato il riconsolidamento statico delle strutture portanti come il tetto, il solaio e i setti murari, dopodiché si è intervenuti sulla distribuzione degli spazi per rendere la struttura antica ancora abitabile e soprattutto confortevole.

In these old villages that have developed over time with spontaneous and gradual additions of different buildings, the houses also display a number of rooms and spaces with differing functions or origins. In this house, for example, the large stone walls are testimony to the ancient walls of the village, whereas the living- room/veranda, once a hayloft, is a recent addition. Needless to say, these ‘signs’ of the past have been the guiding philosophy of the restoration project. The first operation dealt with the static reinforcement of load bearing structures such as the roof, floors and walls. This was followed by work on the distribution of space to make the old structure liveable and, above all, comfortable.

"Le massicce pareti di pietra, parti delle antiche mura che ancora circondano il borgo, raggiungono al piano terra i due metri di spessore. Il soffitto è in legno con le travi a vista: in primo piano si nota la grossa trave centrale che regge la struttura e che in questa parte della Toscana viene chiamata “asinaccio”.
The solid stone walls, part of the ancient city walls that still surround the village, on the ground floor are two metres thick. The beam ceiling has a large central beam that supports the structure, known in this
area of Tuscany as an ‘asinaccio’. "

Il passaggio da un ambiente all’altro è incorniciato da archi in cotto, alcuni esistenti, altri, per conservare la coerenza architettonica, sono stati realizzati ex novo utilizzando materiale di recupero. In nome della stessa coerenza anche il pavimento di tutta la casa è in tavelle di cotto, ma la trama di posa è diversa da stanza a stanza.

Terracotta archways take you from one room to another. Some are original, while others, in order to maintain architectural coherence, have been made using salvaged material. In the name of coherence, the floor of the entire house is in terracotta tiles, although the way they have been laid differs in each room.

E’ stato quindi mantenuto inalterato, senza sabbiature né stuccature.
An archway made of terracotta ashlar separates the kitchen from the living room. The passageway was already existent and, given its excellent state of preservation, needed no restoration work. Thus it remains, unaltered."
