The project, made by the recently established studio in Muralto of Nicola Baserga and Christian Mozzetti, is the extension of the house located in Arbedo, a small commune a few miles from Bellinzona, the capital of the Italian speaking Swiss canton. The project for this house, located in Arbedo to the north of Bellinzona, is an extension of the existing home, typical of the 1970s, with reduced living areas only on the ground floor that communicate with the garden. The building has an upwards development such that the new floors offer different perspectives; it wants to become a territorial point of reference in answer to the ambition to denote the place. This is small-scale architecture that wants to make a stand in order to illustrate the importance between buildings and landscape. L’ampliamento, oggi a supporto della casa esistente, è pensato per diventare in futuro un’abitazione The building has an upwards development such that the new floors offer different perspectives; by rising up it becomes a territorial point of reference in answer to the ambition to denote the place, and in so doing frees it from its previous anonymity: small-scale architecture that wants to make a stand in order to illustrate the importance between buildings and landscape. The extension, today a support for the existing house, has been conceived to be an independent home in the future. Inside, the three key areas are differentiated by large openings which, placed at the ends of the walls, enlarge the space and provide a strong rapport with the exterior. The new volume, built entirely of wood using prefabrication methods, is set on a slightly raised concrete plinth that contains the swimming pool on the south side. The connotation of the window part is a reinterpretation of Louis Kahn’s Fisher House. The window frames are deliberately prominent and they underline the value of the flat surfaces. Contemporary architecture is today full of conceptual experiments. Research has now turned to a new concept of architecture. Having once been called volumetric parasites, these experiments have now turned into added value. They are an example of real architecture in the world of urban development.
