As described by Paolo Emilio d’Arcano towards the middle of the sixteenth century, La Brunelde is a small locality in the parish of Fagagna, situated along the ancient Roman road that connected Iulia Concordia to the frequented Ad Silanos I lavori di restauro hanno avuto inizio nel 2000. Prima di iniziare i lavori è stata fatta un’attenta ricerca sulle antiche Prior to commencing the works, research was made into old techniques and materials used. The project initially concentrated on cleaning stratifications accumulated over the last five hundred years. The aim was to recreate, Il restauro L’obiettivo del restauro non è stato quello del riutilizzo dell’immobile in chiave moderna ma quello di ridare splendore The restoration The aim of the restoration was not to turn the building into a modern setting, but to give new life to the place so that it might continue its journey through time in centuries to come. As the walls were cleaned, old embrasures, old stones and walled areas came to light. Beneath the hall, which over the last sixty years has been used as a stable, we found an original cobblestone paving complete with drainage system which, judging from the old floor plan illustrating how each room was used, must have been the canteen. The work here was clearly made by the hands of master carpenters, stonemasons, and painters. The stones were washed one by one; if they moved, they were reinforced with mortar mixed with iron to get the colour right. All the beams were cleaned, treated against woodworm, and regenerated with natural oils. The stone walls and floors were treated with anti-dust materials that do not alter the surface, leaving them opaque. We restored areas of rotten plaster by recreating the mixes used in the past, thus maintaining the coarseness created by time. Paintings on the walls were restored using ancient colours and medieval products. Electric wires have been hidden in the floor, and instead of light switches there are radio controls that preserve the original medieval setting from the ruin of technology; in cases where hiding was difficult, we used external cables and ceramic switches. The lighting has been carefully studied to emphasise the stone and rock; the medieval lighting of the original chandeliers has nevertheless been preserved. Wrought-iron work has been carried out without welding, which is how it was done in the past; wooden floors have had several coats of citrus oils applied; old ways to make the fireplace work have also been discovered; and doors have been remade in brushed and waxed fir to give the coarse appearance that the place demands. Decisions had to be made as and when the project required. The most motivating part was the search for materials. Every time you looked for an old piece you would find it, which is remarkable in the year 2000. In fact, everyone who participated in the rebirth of La Brunelde is convinced there was a ‘spirit guide’. The result of all this work is that when someone enters for the first time, they get the impression the restoration has limited itself to a spring-cleaning of the existing structure.
