Living in the high mountains in a small village of Alta Val di Susa. The story of an ancient country house built in the 18th century, where the heating system is still the traditional wood-fire stove. A Turin professional was able to use this ancient 18th century building by means of salvaged materials of the area, turning it into a warm and welcoming home in the sign of alpine tradition. At the entrance there is the living room, a space adjacent to the dining area, furnished with ancient furniture salvaged in the valley. A small rise divides the two living areas that, even though keeping their functional independency, harmoniously combine with their traditionally mountain design. Also the heating is traditional: the owners heat the rooms by means of “wood-fire” and only in exceptional cases they use an auxiliary system with electrical heating-convectors that can be switched on by means of a remote control. In the living room a large fireplace brings the heating also in the two bedrooms. In the side, an old pot in copper resting on the wall as a decorative element with warm reflections. Bottom, in the tavern, under rib vaults that alternate white plastered masonry and stones at sight, there are the large table and the two essential wooden benches, local antiques. In the side page, a view of the owner bedroom, where the structure with beams at sight towers in the wooden ceiling. For the bathroom, made on two levels, a covering with green nuances.
TODAY AND YESTERDAY RANGE COOKER Today the traditional range cooker, which was invented in Great Britain in the first half of the 19th century, is still fashionable, in particular in mountain or country houses. This special cooker was equipped with many accessories and used for different services allowing to waste less fuel compared with the fireplace. It is in cast iron and refractory and made with a 2.5 cm thick main ring, on which pots and different objects that have to be heated are laid. It is equipped with a small main shutter, where wood or carbon burns, and a pull-out small drawer underneath, where ashes are gathered; other two shelves with shutters are used to cook or heat up food. The bottom of the cooker, where there is the chafing dish is the cooler side, while the cast iron ring is the hot-test one, as heat tends to climb. It has the advantage to quickly heat a room where sometimes we stay for only a short time. For the lovers of tradition there are many choice opportunities and a beautiful range cooker can also be a valid fur-nishing element of our house. |
