Provided that environmental conditions are suitable, house plants may be kept on verandas, even a small one. This affords all the benefits of the “greenhouse effect ”,stemming from the particular quality of glass permeated by the sun ’s radiating energy which subsequently heats up everything inside the glass-protected environment.Everything is heated up and,in turn, emits heat but in the form of longer radiation wavelengths which cannot permeate the glass. This means that everything housed on a veranda is subjected to higher temperatures than outside. At south European latitudes, verandas are very useful for in-between seasons when the heat radiated by the sun is f medium intensity -or on cloudy or rainy days when the heat of the sun still filters through the clouds. This means that a small vegetable patch may be cultivated on the veranda and that flower bulbs may be made to bloom in advance.Plants can be allowed to flower longer when they would otherwise have stopped growing,i.e. had they been planted outside in autumn. The veranda is also very useful in winter:in soft, temperate climates, the veranda temperature never drops below 4-5 °and is,therefore, the ideal place for keeping house plants that not only suffer from cold rigid outside temperatures but which are also affected by central heating. If the veranda is situated in colder climes, either in terms of latitude or altitude, installation of a heating system might be necessary for plant-growing purposes.

I vetri

Glass
This should be tempered,i.e.harder and more resistant than ordinary glass (even if it breaks it is not dangerous, nor does it shatter into a thousand fragments). In order to ensure compliance with regulations, the glass on the roof must be break-proof and tempered to withstand possible hail storms,or tiles or ther objects falling from above. The glass used for the walls must be break-proof,and one metre off the ground.Special glass is also available on the market reflecting glass which allows the permeation of light -but not most heat-producing infra-red rays, thus eliminating the need for shading.Low emission glass that keeps heat inside is advisable for cold or north-facing areas, thus reducing heating to a minimum. The best, though most expensive, solution is the use of combined glass.

Heating
This is necessary if the outside climate is rigid or if the veranda is significantly large. In this case,an independent system may be installed (i.e.the type used for small apartments). A system of this type, though fairly expensive, generally yields well. Heating may be connected to he domestic system by treating the veranda as if it were another room. Finally,a portable electric heater can be used and put away in summer. Whatever choice is made to heat he veranda,he heating system must always come complete with a good thermostat so that the internal emperature of he veranda oscillates,at maximum, by one or wo degrees vis-à-vis values sought.Furthermore, a good ventilation system is also advisable.

Where to build a veranda
This should be far removed from trees, which would reduce solar radiation and dirty the glass.Furthermore, the veranda should be accessible from the house, not only for the sake of convenience, but also for possible connection to electric or water supplies.

What type of plants should be used on a veranda
House plants, which suffer from the cold in winter or overheated apartments, enjoy veranda-type climates.Kentia, the most common house palm -in addition to not equiring much attention (it needs light and not much watering)-is extremely elegant and ornamental. The different varieties of Philodendron (oval, sagital or lance-shaped,with a whole or lobed or pinnate edge)are not difficult to cultivate, and are well-suited to the environment. They enjoy strong sunlight, without needing too much attention in terms of earth or watering. Here follow some of the most popular types of house plant which may be used to embellish a veranda.Worth particular note is the Ficus family:the beauty -though somewhat stiff -of their leaves and their adaptation to the environment explain their widespread popularity. They prosper at temperatures of between 18-20 °and flourish best in damp places, without requiring too much attention. Thanks to its beautiful oblong, brightly dappled leaves,Dieffenbachia is a much sought-after plant. It is,however, extremely sensitive to climatic changes, and will suffer when the temperature drops to 4-6 °.Earth is not a factor; under optimum conditions this plant grows rapidly while simultaneously losing its basal leaves:it only needs to be potted a few centimetres from the base for new shoots to appear.Croton,a somewhat demanding plant both in terms of earth and climate,is extremely striking on account of its white and yellow striped leaves. Aucuba, less striking than Croton, with its green and yellow- speckled leaves is a ustic bush that, when given the right kind of care, affords hours of satisfaction. It may also be positioned in darker corners or shadier areas of the veranda.

Among the flowering plants that, even during the winter months embellish our homes with their colour, worth particular mention are African violets,Begonias,Cyclamens and Anthurium -the list coul
d go on and on.Simple Saintpaulia or African violets are happiest at temperatures of 25-28 °,and are not well disposed to direct sunlight which yellows their leaves.Flowering occurs throughout most of the year, but is more luxuriant in summer. This plant does not require much watering or attention.Almost all Begonias (it is almost impossible to count the existing varieties)-often found in mountain areas on account of requiring cool night-time temperatures during the summer months -love humid climates and lots of sunlight, but cannot cope with frost.Anthurium (arum lilies)are beautiful and elegant with their spadix-shaped flowers:one red and curved, the other closed by a white, yellow or pink spathe.Cyclamen, meanwhile,is easy to find and grow. Although it prospers in abundant sunlight and humid environments, its roots or leaves should never be over-watered.The ideal temperature for cyclamen is between 18-24 °.These plants should be kept away from draughts at all costs.Cyclamens can be kept from one year to the next: when flowering is over, the leaves turn yellow and watering may be reduced to a minimum.Dry the vase and place the plant in a shady area until late summer.Repot and gradually increase watering until it starts blooming again.

What makes for healthy veranda plants

IRRIGAZIONE/WATERING

Watering should be reduced during winter when the vegetative cycle of the plants is interrupted. This should be more frequent and abundant in summer when plants are in full vegetation. The best time for watering is in the morning:make sure that the roots are not over-watered at night as this may cause them to rot.During very hot weather,it is advisable to spray water onto the leaves of most plants to ensure that they are always clean and can carry out their function.

Necessary and beneficial during the summer season, this should be kept to a minimum in winter owing to the fact that it causes fungal diseases and condensation to form on glass, which makes it lose its transparency.

TEMPERATURA/TEMPERATURE

The necessary temperature may vary according on the plants housed on the veranda. An important factor is,however, that, once an ideal temperature has been established it is kept as constant as possible.

OMBREGGIAMENTO/SHADING

To prevent overheating, particular attention should be paid to shading -especially during the summer months:almost all plants are damaged by temperatures exceeding 30-32 °.

CURA DELLE PIANTE QUANDOSI PARTE PER UNA VACANZA
PLANT CARE DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON

If one cannot entrust watering to a neighbour, and there is no possibility of automatic watering, emergency solutions may be adopted.Give the plants a good watering and then cover them in transparent plastic bags to preserve the moisture around the plant itself.Make sure that the area is well-shaded and leave the windows open to ensure ventilation. In order to ensure that there is enough moisture on the veranda, place bowls of water on the ground -when these evaporate the moisture in the air will automatically increase.
