Ex convento a Bassignana (AL). There are places in which history and the present day merge together effortlessly and naturally. And there are spaces in which the past is conjured up by means of clever touches and evocative forms. In this attic, obtained by the restoration of a seventeenth century convent, past memories are given room to breathe and become an element of everyday life for its tenants. First the materials, from the wood used for the beams, the cleft pietra di Luserna, the unfired brick used for the walls, and the larchwood planks covering the floor. Delving deeper into past recollections and going even further back into the past is the appeal of an old wooden door left wide open and standing on its hinges in the living room; it is an elegant reference and an element of refined decoration. There is a feeling here of an awareness of the present, while savouring all the appeal of the past, which is transmitted by the privilege of living in an old convent.

The fireplace, designed by the architect, is reminiscent of medieval fireplaces thanks to its open forms, its elongated hood, and its generous size. A lighter touch is provided by the hi-tech addition of sheet metal used to cover the hood, which is in pleasant contrast to the slab of cleft stone used for the base. The roof is an insulated load-bearing structure in wood, the interior of which has matchboarding made with small blanched wooden beams. Trusses that supported the roof before restoration have lost their structural role, yet their ancient appeal has remained intact given that they have been almost untreated, with the exception of a coating of anti-woodworm solution. Restoration has involved all three floors, and the unifying element of the various floors is the ten-metre-high yellow wall that conceptually brings together Nelle foto: La cucina unisce arredi di design ad atmosfere tradizionali; Dove la consapevolezza del savoir vivre richiede attenzione al proprio benessere viene naturale creare spazi intimi in cui perdersi nel prendersi cura del proprio corpo. This type of consideration has encouraged the architect to create a bathroom in two separate rooms. One, which connects directly to the bedroom and walk-in wardrobe, serves as an area preceding the bathroom, and has been fitted with shelves to solve problems of space. From here, a crystal door takes you to a private area in which the role of ‘temple of well-being’ is carried out by a large wall-shower decorated with Bisazza glass mosaic. The overall impression of this restored room is that one can give free reign to one’s desires, while being guided by a delicately evocative surrounding.
