What is the use of an architect’s imagination if not to reinvent spaces and create hollywood-style homes out of chicken pens? Taken in this sense, the restoration here is exemplary.

The mezzanine ceiling, here as in so many other cases, is at the basis of a spatial design of remarkable decorative appeal. By setting the entrance on two levels, a theatrical wing has been created with a perspective view of the herringbone beams, which go up the stairs all the way to the mezzanine, the traditional wrought-iron balustrade, the large arched doorway with translucent crystal that provides a glimpse of the garden, and plenty of light that comes in through the many windows. It could come straight out of a play by Pirandello, with small doors that open up to the unexpected and small round windows from which ‘the others’ spy. Yet this is not the scene of a play; here is
merely a suggestion of how to spend a summer or weekends relaxing for those who, during the week, work in the city.

The key to the restoration of this small rustic house, thus removing the limiting size in which we found it, has been to alternate rooms that have the two floors with underlying rooms (the ones that have been halved by the attic). This has created large openings onto the garden, and cantilever roofs that allow you to live inside and out for most of the year. If beyond the cantilever roof there is a swimming pool, so much the better.

Many steps and a few walls-cum-balustrades animate this space, which without expert help would risk being excessively simple in a context (that of the rustic house) where spontaneous construction has usually led to an add-on effect of stratified architecture. The possibility of having, in an open space, various vantage points from above is a defin
ite bonus for those inhabiting the house, even if the two steps may at first seem tiring. The use of glass as a separator, and windows on the other side, is always worthwhile if it doesn’t invade privacy. In the small photographs
of the previous page you can see the two ground floor rooms, a small indoor living room and the veranda, both of which look onto the pool. The swimming pool, perhaps the most spectacular feature of the project, is amoeboid shaped
and extends all the way to the woods, where it stops at a bench-sculpture in cement that recalls some of the shapes in the Parco Güell of Barcelona. Making the garden more visionary are some tropical palm and banana trees.
