Ogni luogo ha in sè una sua chiara identità, che è potenzialmente positiva o negativa all'insediamento umano. Il Feng Shui è l'arte cinese che permette di conoscere e di riequilibrare le forze intrinseche all'ambiente dell'uomo armonizzandole con le energie della natura stessa. Nella concezione cinese del cosmo il Qi, inteso come flusso energetico , è il fondamento stesso dell'esistenza, da cui hanno origine la materia e la vita stessa. E' energia pura ed esiste in ogni cosa come unione tra materia e spirito.
Questo scatena potenti flussi, i quali possono influenzare positivamente o negativamente lo spazio. Una attenta progettazione permette di riequilibrare la armonia nei luoghi. L'ambiente deve perciò essere sempre attentamente analizzato affinché i nuovi insediamenti non portino a squilibri. Importante è quindi, non solo prevedere una saggia progettazione, ma anche una attenta e curata scelta dei materiali, che sono la pelle dell'edificio e che influenzano l'intimità del focolare domestico. A questo proposito è interessante vedere come il legno, in quanto materiale 'vivo', filtri e depuri l'aria interna delle abitazioni, compensando le variazioni di umidità degli ambienti ed evitando quindi lo sgradevole formarsi di muffe e di condensa.
